About the game
The game's story is a 13th-century Japanese epic, with beautiful and detailed scenery including animals, torii gates, and Shinto temples.
You are the samurai lord Jin Sakai, and you are tasked with repelling the Mongol invaders (under the orders of Khotun Khan, grandson of the famous Genghis) in order to reclaim your lands and avenge the insult to your house which was invaded and stormed.
However, to succeed, you must make difficult decisions: adhere to the strict and honorable protocols of the samurai or do what is morally right? From Jin, the upright samurai, to "The Ghost," you will gather a diverse team of allies. As you travel, you will uncover their stories and help them solve their problems.
Among your allies are Sensei Ishikawa, the famous samurai archer searching for his missing student, Masako, a grieving mother who wants revenge on those who murdered her family, and Yuna, the thief who saved your life at the very beginning of the story and who will do anything to save her brother from the Mongols.
In more detail
As you progress through the story, side quests and NPCs (non-player characters) guide you through its twists and turns, inviting you to take detours and further appreciate the beautifully rendered landscapes. There are even moments of tranquility where you can simply sit back and enjoy nature.
For less peaceful moments, you have a katana for self-defense (and attack) among other weapons. (More information on weapons below.) You will choose to embody one of the four available classes and you can play in single-player mode (which is actually for one or two players) or cooperative mode (which is for two or four players) or you can try the multiplayer version.
You can play in English or Japanese with optional English subtitles – however, lip-readers will quickly notice that the mouth movements are for English, regardless of your language choice. You can also opt for Kurosawa Mode to evoke the black-and-white classics of the legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, who gave the world its enduring image of Japanese samurai with his films about this chivalrous world.
Side quests are known as tales: there are standard tales based on real life (or nearly so), and also mystical tales that explore the more supernatural side of things. Combat is, as you might expect, primarily katana-based, and you can take down an enemy with a few skillful blows. But you can be taken down in the same way, so you need to learn to block, parry, and dodge, as well as wield your sword like a pro. High scores improve your experience, making the game's precision worth the effort.
There's no map on the screen; in fact, there are no indicators at all in the open world. While this makes the gameplay immersive, it can also be frustrating—until you realize the game is full of clues and reminders: the wind subtly blows in the direction of the recommended route. Occasionally, elements like plumes of smoke, flocks of birds, swirling leaves, and so on will give you valuable hints.
You will primarily travel on horseback, and will be able to use grappling hooks when you need to climb or access something out of your reach.
What weapons?
As you progress, you unlock increasingly impressive armor, costumes, and charms, many of which can be upgraded. These perks include damage reduction, reduced enemy awareness (making it take them longer to notice you), improved health, faster healing, or increased melee damage. The only exceptions are head and face customizations, which are purely cosmetic.
- Katana: your traditional samurai sword, which improves as you find power-ups and boosters, literally giving you the advantage in battles.
- Bows: Bows and arrows were the weapons of choice back then, but these have an added bonus. Different types of bows have different effects on the enemy, so have fun trying them out and be sure to stock up on your quiver.
- Stealth: While not traditionally considered a weapon, players will quickly realize that stealth is less about helping you sneak past your enemies, and more about allowing you to position yourself perfectly to ambush them.
- Firecrackers: If your stealth tactics aren't quite working, throw a few firecrackers to distract or discourage them while you sneak up on them and add to your body count.
- Smoke bombs: like firecrackers, but longer lasting, smoke bombs can help you set up a scene or, if you don't feel like a battle right now, sneak into an enemy camp.
- Kunai: These fierce-looking stabbing darts were originally considered masons' tools, suitable for self-defense. Today, and in this game, they are ideal daggers, throwing knives, and generally sharp points that help you take down multiple enemies at once.
