2D is obviously made up of flat images with a length and a width. 3D also offers depth, whether it's real depth, as in real-life scenarios, or simulated depth for games and movies. 2.5D is when the illusion of 3D is offered on a 2D platform, or when a game is sometimes 2D with certain features that are fully 3D. This game is the first.
About the game
Players all start with the same equipment and appearance, much of which can then be customized to their liking. The avatar's appearance has no impact on the character's abilities, so a player can express their aesthetic tastes without making their avatar weaker or less effective, unlike in some other games.
There are a total of twenty-five playable characters, most with fascinating and compelling backstories, giving each player plenty of choices in terms of appearance, aggression, defense, etc.
The pleasure of time travel
The defining feature of this version of the Mortal Kombat timeline is the time travel element. It's ideal for older players who get a nostalgic glimpse into previous games, while newer players can see past storylines replayed and unfold differently. These fascinating features lead to very different outcomes—and sometimes different ones than players intended!
To earn enough points for upgrades and access to locked areas, players may find that some grinding is required. This involves repeating tasks or revisiting old missions to gain experience points or other perks. However, it can be enjoyable, especially when replaying easier missions with new powers: old enemies are dispatched with gleeful ease!
The death knell of last resort
A new feature in this game is the introduction of Fatal Blows. These aren't always available, but can only be used once your health has dropped dangerously low. They serve as a last resort, a final attempt to grab your opponent before they finish you off.
Attack and defense meters are now separate, so you can boost your attack to make a particularly powerful strike, or you can boost your defense for clever evasions or counter-attacks without using too much power. The tutorials will quickly and easily show you how to use these new features, and you'll be on your way to success in no time.
Ways to play
- Story Mode
As mentioned above, the story of MK is now a long and complex saga that deserves to be published as a book or standalone film. Play the game until you reach one of the two official endings – or break from canon and invent your own!
- Combat mode
Blood splatters everywhere as you revel in the disgusting yet inventive ways of painting gore, eliminating everyone in sight. Explore the open map to find targets or follow the on-screen instructions—just take your time, bloodthirsty as you are!
- Crypt mode
This is more of a side game than a mode, and can save you some of the work mentioned above. Plunder the island for treasure and other loot, destroy walls and open chests to collect gold and other valuables, which can then be used to buy custom skins, weapons and gear, secret entrances, and even to modify AI behavior in your favor.

All in all, Mortal Kombat 11 is a great package, and nicely fleshed out with a ton of content and modes for both the casual fighting game players like myself and the hardcore community who want to get stuck into the online battling. The heavy involvement of microtransactions can be an annoyance, for sure, but there\'s more than enough to get busy with to help beat the grind.
