Description
Skull and Bones for PC is a tactical action-survival game set in an open-world environment from a third-person perspective. It differs from typical survival games—however fun they may be—in that you'll constantly be heading out to sea to achieve your objectives, rather than remaining stationary in one place and trying to defend your territory as it expands.
About the game
The game begins in a way familiar to fans of the survival genre, with the protagonist washing dishes on a beach with nothing but tattered clothes and a few odds and ends to their name. Struggling to survive as they make their way to the nearby town of Saint Anne, a haven for pirates, you arrive in town and begin working to return to the seas and earn infamy and money.
There isn't much to do in terms of navigation: most of your action at sea is in the hands of your NPC crew, but you must keep an eye on their morale so they don't mutiny against you – they must be kept happy, well-fed, and regularly receiving the promised glass of rum or whiskey!
Despite the lack of ropes to pull on and means of securing your ship, you must remain vigilant, keeping a watchful eye out for invaders and other pirates. If anything happens to the ship, you will spawn in the nearest safe haven, but your precious loot, cargo, and treasure (everything you had on board) will be gone, waiting in the middle of the ocean for another player to swoop in and seize it.
Experience points in this game (usually XP) are called "infamy," and the more you have, the more powerful ships and better quests you can unlock. This also means you have a bigger target on your back. NPC ships, laden to the gunwales with pirate-hunting corsairs eager to capture a big, bad pirate captain for a hefty bounty, roam the seas, and they will hunt you down skillfully and enthusiastically unless you're a little more cautious in your travels.
Throughout the game, you'll undertake a series of quests, increasing your power and infamy with each turn, setting sail, winning, winning, and winning again, then returning to safely hide everything away before setting off once more. It's incredibly satisfying to go from a ragged castaway to an imposing fleet captain over the course of the game.
The essentials
As you can guess from the title, the game is entirely devoted to piracy and includes both a single-player game, where the player embodies the character of a pirate captain; and multiplay, with up to five teammates, fighting other ships in contested waters.
The game originated from the hugely popular Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and was initially conceived as an expansion pack, then as a standalone MMO, before gaining enough popularity and demand to become a full-fledged game. Microtransactions are a feature of this game, but you can still achieve your goals without spending any extra money if you're on a tight budget.
Your health bar lets you know how much additional damage you can take when attacked – or deal, if you're the aggressor: ramming other ships is a great way to get close enough to board, plunder, and rob them before returning to your own ship and letting them sink! All ships are equipped with crow's nests that you can climb into for a bird's-eye view of the surrounding ocean and a clearer picture of the battle unfolding.
In single-player mode, you can sail alone across the Indian Ocean, following the single-player campaign. You'll learn as you go: how to use the wind to gain the best sailing position. And you'll also have an impressive arsenal to master: broadside cannons, mortars, and rockets, all of which are integrated into the many types of ships you can acquire, through honest or nefarious means.
The new collectible ships include frigates, war sloops, and brigantines—a range from cargo vessels and wily navigators to firefighters equipped with exotic weapons, such as Greek fire, which is always fun to dabble in. And while you're mastering all of these, you'll also be on the hunt for treasure, loot, and gifts like telescopes, which you can then use to improve your chances in battle.
Multiplayer modes include head-to-head skirmishes during treasure hunts, to see who can collect the most treasure the fastest. Game customization is good and detailed: for example, covering your ship with excessively heavy armor makes it practically uncontrollable and uses up most of the space you should be saving for cargo and loot.
Most of the activities you would expect to be land-based can actually be done on board, with "resource nodes" placed at sea to allow you to navigate and collect resources such as newly mined ores, felled and prepared timber, and even freshly skinned animals.
Things to do in Sainte-Anne
Saint Anne, a sort of safe haven for pirates, serves as the game's hub, and you can embark on all sorts of adventures while catching your breath after naval battles. You can:
Collect missions and quests that will earn you infamy, supplies, and customizations.
Speak to the NPCs, who can provide you with clues and vital information to help you complete your current task.
Craft ships and equipment to fit inside your ships; the size and impressiveness of your ships increase with each increase in your infamy levels.
Buy supplies – disgruntled crew members may mutiny, so keep them well fed!
Make friends with other players. The open nature of the game means that some of the other ships you encounter will be populated by other players: team up with them, trade with them, or, if you wish, fight them for their loot!
Work on treasure maps – what good is being a pirate captain unless you have a small stash of valuable loot hidden away with detailed maps on how to retrieve it hidden around you?
