(This is a long review. The tl;dr is that this is an amazing and beautiful edition, with some good extras and a game that is both absorbing and entertaining).Let’s start with the physical edition:The game comes in a box, which is slightly bigger than a standar Xbox case (See pictures for comparison). Inside is another box which includes the steelbook and the art booklet. Inside the steelbook is the full game plus the Armed and Dangerous update, so you can play it even if you don’t have internet access. Also inside is a code for the soundtrack, which is downloaded directly from the Maximum Games website. The artbook is more of a booklet, soft cover and with 64 pages of art. It does include a some, in my opinion, minor spoilers for the game story (The characters you’ll encounter, the planets you can visit, the ships you can buy). The art included is beautiful, with both concept and final art.For the game itself:1.- What kind of game is it:If you play the original, it’s no longer a Rogue-like/lite, it’s a looter shooter in which you are going to be piloting a ship. It has some rpg mechanics, but consider it as a cross between Borderlands and Elite Dangerous, with the loot and progression more like the former and the theme of the latter. Mind you, it’s way more arcady than Elite, so don’t expect very complex mechanics (For me that’s a plus, as I’m not as fond of the more complicated nature a deal breaker).2.- Moment to moment gameplay:The game consists of you going to ethier a planet, a space station or even to general space to complete a variety of missions, from destroying, finding, escorting, chasing, killing, looting something or someone as well as accepting quests, meeting merchants, and other activities. The game features classes in the shape of ships, with their unique attributes, abilities, equipment slots, etc. There are also upgrades that applies to every ship but if you really want to experience different builds go for different ship types. If you don’t care about it, the main ship is perfectly balanced and can carry you for the entirety of the game, but I do recommend experimenting. Weapons and ship modules can be bought, find while exploring or fighting or crafted and you can even craft special items that will allow you to add special attributes to your weapons. You can also level up old gear so it can still be usable and even increase its rarity so you can unlock extra attributes. You can also dismantle your old equipment and the ones you don’t like to unlock blueprints that will let you craft those items in the future.3.- Difficulty:The game offers multiple difficulty options. I always, given the choice, play on normal, and the game is fair. It can be difficult though, as being 2 or even 1 level below the recommended one can make combat extremely difficult, with enemies blowing you up instantly. That can be frustrating, bit I do, however, recommend giving encounters more than one try before leaving as you can quickly learn their patterns and defeat them. As for leveling up, if your plan is to only do the main story missions, you’ll find yourself severely under level, so doing side quests and taking on random activities is highly recommended.4.- Presentation:The game looks amazing. It goes for a realistic style but stylised with some classic Sci-fi themes. The space stations, the facilities, every man made thing looks like it was build by humans, from the design, the practicality, with every detail and flaw being there for a reason. It looks like a window to the future, but with some fantastical elements, specially in the alien races, that makes it so is not boring or dull. The game has a great use of colour, with lighting affecting the player as well as the environment. Paired it with an amazing soundtrack that gives each location, characters, encounters a unique sound and personality that you feel absorbed by the game, as your ship and you become one. Speaking of the ship, you can change the colour of the ships by finding different colours while exploring and defeating harder enemies. You can also add cosmetic modules to your ship, making them feel unique. Finally for presentation the cutscenes are made by having still images with some elements of them moving (For example one cutscene can show a static image of some characters in a hangar but the lights will flicker, with sparks flying from a broken piece of a ship). Think of them as the dynamic themes on Xbox.5.- Story and characters:The story is a continuation of the first game. You play as Adam, a clone. After the end of a big intergalactic war, clones are declared illegal. After escaping from capture, Adam runs into Dax, who offers him a chance at a once in a lifetime job.I played Everspace 1 when it released and when booting Everspace 2, I’ve forgotten a lot of what happened in the first one. But the game makes a good enough job of catching you up to the story through dialogue and characters, so I think that if you haven’t played the original one, don’t worry, you won’t be lost. The story is good but nothing special. It will keep you engage, but it can be a little bit boring at times. It’s a good way to unlock and give context to new encounters, perks and locations and, while I wish that the story had more surprises and took more risks, the reason you play this game is for the gameplay. On the other hand, characters a well written and you can relate to their struggles and ambitions. They are well rounded and have good arcs, and you’ll end up invested in their particular story. Sadly, and this is the weakest part of the game, the voice acting can be bad. Characters will over act or have little emotion, with little to no in-between. The way they deliver their lines clashes with the tone of the dialogue, leaving you mostly confused after most interactions. Fortunately, the main character Adam and the AI, HIVE, (and most of the characters in the box art) have great to decent voice acting. Considering that you are going to spend the majority of the time with Adam and HIVE, it’s not that bad, because the voice acting on both of them is great. Conclusion:The Stellar Edition is an amazing way to get the game. You can play it without an internet connection as all of the data is on the disc, you get a beautiful steelbook and a interesting and equally beautiful artbook, with a soundtrack that you can listen outside the game without it feeling out of place or lacking in content. The game, while not being perfect, it’s really good and it will hook you if you let it. Relax with some awsome vibes, get yourself some loot that goes with what you want and enjoy a beautiful game, full of things to explore, discover and experience.
