Description

Split Fiction is an adventure game built around a single promise: to experience a story together, from beginning to end, with boundless creativity. There's no "optional" co-op added at the end: the entire game is designed for cooperation, with levels and mechanics that demand coordination, communication, and mutual support.

Release date: March 6, 2025

The starting point is clear: two heroines find themselves trapped in a device that transforms their stories into real worlds. The game deliberately plays on the contrast between two universes: science fiction on one side, fantasy On the other hand. And rather than choosing, Split Fiction blends the two, linking radically different areas where you switch from one atmosphere to another without warning. The result is an adventure that feels like a "best of" co-op experience: you explore, you flee, you fight, you solve, you jump, you pilot, and you start all over again… but never in exactly the same way.

The goal of the game: to progress together and escape the trap

The overall objective is simple: browse through chapters, overcome their trials, conquer their obstacles, and advance to the exit. But on the scale of a game, the "real" goal is above all to succeed as a pair:

  • understand the mechanics of the current level,

  • divide up the roles,

  • execute the actions at the right time.,

  • to correct the other person's mistakes,

  • and overcome each obstacle as a team.

Split Fiction isn't a game where one player "carries" the other while the other watches. The situations are designed so that each player has something important to do. Even when the action becomes very fast-paced, the idea remains the same: If one falls, the other must react.

The gameplay loop: chapter → mechanics → challenges → boss → new world

The structure functions as a succession of chapters, each with its own identity. The typical loop looks like this:

  1. Discovering a new world (new atmosphere, new rules)

  2. Introduction of a cooperative mechanism (two complementary powers, one tool each)

  3. Increase in complexity (more challenging puzzles, more intense action)

  4. Spectacular sequence / set-piece (the "wow" moment when everything speeds up)

  5. Boss (a fight designed to specifically utilize the mechanics of the chapter)

  6. Transition (and the game starts again with a new idea)

This format creates a very fast pace: you almost never have time to get bored with a mechanic, because the game is already pushing you towards the next one. This is one of the great pleasures of Split Fiction: feeling constantly surprised, while maintaining a logical progression.

Two characters, two roles, a permanent collaboration

Each protagonist possesses unique actions and abilities specific to each chapter. The game emphasizes complementarity: one controls one element, the other controls another; one creates an opportunity, the other transforms it into a solution. This dynamic serves both the puzzles and the action sequences.

  • In a puzzle, one person can activate elements while the other moves through them; ;

  • In a platform sequence, one player can secure an area while the other advances; ;

  • In a fight, one can expose the weak point while the other strikes.

This approach creates a real sense of teamwork. The best moments often come from successful coordination: the right timing, the right words, the right decision made together.

Platforming, action, puzzles: a game "that's constantly changing"“

Split Fiction blends several gameplay styles, but always with one common thread: cooperation. Depending on the world, the adventure may emphasize:

  • 3D platform (jumps, timing, partner movements),

  • cooperative puzzles (mechanics for two, activation, manipulation, coordination),

  • action (confrontations, dodges, more intense phases),

  • chase sequences (pressure, obstacles, improvisation),

  • set-pieces very cinematic (spectacular moments that require quick reflexes).

The game also enjoys playing with contrasts: one section might be very serious and tense, then the next becomes lighter or absurd, before returning to an intense challenge. This variety makes the adventure particularly well-suited to playing with two people: you chat, you laugh, you encourage each other, you get a little frustrated… then you start all over again until you succeed.

An adventure designed to be played by two people, even if only one copy is purchased.

Split Fiction is designed to minimize the friction of co-op gameplay. The idea is to make cooperation simple: invite someone, start a game, and progress. Cross-play allows you to play together even if you're on different platforms (PS5 / Xbox Series X/S / PC), and a "Friend Pass" system lets a partner join the game without having to buy a second copy (subject to platform terms and conditions).
As a result, the game becomes very easy to share, whether as a couple, with friends or with family.

For what type of player?

Split Fiction is ideal for:

  • the players who want a true co-op game (not a secondary mode),

  • duos who love the various games (platform + puzzle + action),

  • those looking for a "spectacle" game with memorable moments,

  • players who enjoy communicating and solving problems together,

  • people who enjoyed modern co-op adventures and want a new experience in the same style.

The game is suitable for both "experienced" duos and more casual players, as it is designed to teach its mechanics as you progress through the chapters and to encourage you to progress together.

A very good two-player game. If you've played It Takes Two, you'll love this game because it's from the same creators. At first, I was very skeptical, fearing it would be a copy of the previous game, but the further you progress in the story, the more your doubts fade away. The game is truly fantastic, the quality is top-notch, and a single copy is enough to play with two people on the same console or remotely. The quality is definitely there. You'll spend several hours facing situations that aren't always easy to overcome. My only disappointment is that the game only contains a code and not a physical cartridge. It's impossible to resell it once you've finished it.

An excellent game, both narratively and in terms of gameplay. It boasts an original storyline set in meticulously crafted worlds, polished gameplay, a good dose of fun, and above all, a well-designed cooperative gameplay system that ensures enjoyment throughout. The game can be challenging at times without being frustrating, as there are no life counters or maximum number of attempts. This game is an excellent choice for playing with a friend, your partner, or anyone else looking to experience approximately 15 hours of pure bliss. The only minor drawback: disc 2 wasn't recognized by the Xbox Series X, and the game ultimately had to be downloaded from the store… without any explanation as to why the game couldn't be installed using the two discs included in the box.

A must-have for 2-player games. Great game, if you liked It Takes Two, you'll love Split Fiction. Basically, it's more or less the same gameplay mechanics with a brand new story and a visually appealing fantasy/sci-fi universe. The gameplay is top-notch, and you won't get bored in this adventure—a real treat in the very limited world of games playable by two people on the same screen! However, one comment that has nothing to do with the game's quality: Frankly, the physical media is pathetic. It takes an hour to install just to copy two measly discs, and then you still can't launch the game because it requires an update… And then another hour because you have to reinstall the physical media for some obscure reason… So, after two hours, it was too late to play… Well done to Microsoft for doing everything they can for digital media. When the Switch 2 comes out, I'll buy physical games from Nintendo, because with them, you put in the cartridge and you play; you don't wait two hours. Actually, I wonder… almost if the game is playable offline.

A must-have in its genre. From the creators of It Takes Two. Here, they've adopted a similar formula: an ultra-fun co-op platform adventure packed with brilliant ideas. I played it with my girlfriend, and we had a blast from beginning to end. The graphics are crisp, the story is simple but easy to follow. The different levels are all high-quality, and the various gameplay mechanics introduced throughout constantly surprise and refresh. An excellent co-op game, but also an excellent game, period.

Guaranteed fun. This game is a gem of cooperative gameplay. I really enjoyed it. The story is fun and the gameplay is varied with touches of humor. And a good dose of challenge for the hidden level that really made me sweat 😅
